Boric acid is used to rebalance the ph of the vagina so it can be used for fungal and bacterial infections.
WELCOME
Edit: I WAS CURED AFTER 22 YEARS! I had a vestibulectomy Dec. 2016. The recovery was easier for me than having sex ever was. It took about 5 weeks. I have included my recovery photos. Look for the blogpost "I'm Cured!" and "My Vestibulectomy".
I’m a great woman with a pissed-off vulva. I have “primary vestibulitis." Most people are uncomfortable discussing their genital pain in public. My hope is that my obsession to find help for myself will make your experience shorter, easier, and less painful. P.S. Recently "vestibulitis" has been renamed to "vestibulodynia."

Boric Acid Journal Article
On my youtube video on "How to Make Boric Acid Suppositories", I received a message saying that boric acid is rat poison. This is true. The commenter wrote, "Boric acid is used to poison rats. If you have cuts or chafes in your vagina, using boric acid suppositories could lead to various side effects ranging from nausea to death." She said to read a specific article about it on livingwell.com. I found the article I believe she referred to at livestrong.com and then pulled up the three references to read with more depth. Two were useless. The third was from a scientific journal "Infectious Diseases in Obstetrics and Gynecology" and seems to be good research. I have linked to it below as it is worth reading.
My take-away as to the journal article's conclusions are: 1. anti-fungals in the -azole category (fluconazole, difluconazole, etc.) are quite effective for treating most yeast infections, 2. boric acid is an alternate treatment to try should a chronic yeast infection be resistant to the -azoles, 3. both should be prescribed and supervised under a doctor's care. The link is below.
(As I side note, I believe the writer to be irresponsible, having written her piece based on an incorrect or superficial reading (web writers get paid to put something on a page) and what she wrote was unsupported journalism.)

Good Outcome: Stanford Vulvar Dermatologist Visit
I had been dreading seeing a dismissive dermatological gynecologist I thought I had already seen a few years ago, but NO! Dr. Joanna Badger (now referred to in my household as "Mary Poppins") is a vulvar dermatologist. And most kind.
My current treatment plan with her is to up the amount of Pristique (a SNRI I was already on) from 250mg to 300mg (my dosage I was on originally was pretty high). I then had to abandon all my creams, ointments, boric acid suppositories, and even my fluconazole (!) for the duration of this trial so as not to have too many confounding factors in play. She mentioned that she could have gone the tricyclic route instead of the SNRI, but I have been on a tricyclic before (awful) and am on Pristique already (convenient). She worked the dosage out with my psychiatrist.
I noticed an immediate and consistent drop in pain. This has made the biggest difference to me thus far in my 16 years of treatment.
I returned to her a few weeks ago with the results that the pain had dropped significantly, but was not gone. She again worked with my psychiatrist and right now I am at 350mg with the expectation of going to 400mg. All of this depends on how I "tolerate" that high level of medication. FDA approval is to 400mg.
To summarize: 250mg took care of my psychiatric stuff; 300mg took maybe even better care of my psychiatric stuff and lowered my pain, but my eyes and throat are dry; and I haven't noticed any improvement at 350mg in my head or vulva, but still have dry eyes and throat. I will go up to 400mg this week although I doubt there will be improvement (prove me wrong gods, prove me wrong!). I will likely return to 300mg.
Something interesting here is that I was super-freaked that I had yeast infections as soon as she said I should get off Diflucan. She asked me my symptoms and said that just smelling the smell of bread with some white discharge did not constitute a yeast infection and I need to mellow out.

Boric Acid Info.: A Little Hilarious and Helpful
I did not write what you find below. I found this on an Amazon listing for boric acid. This is a situation in which I have NO personal experience with any idea other than using boric acid as a suppository to rebalance vaginal acidity and treat yeast infections. So, I don't specifically endorse her ideas, but I am amused by the boric acid experimentation she has done. I am not going to experiment, but the cocoa powder approach would be safe.
She mentions that she turned to boric acid after Monistat and 3 doses of Diflucan. Diflucan can be taken on an ongoing basis; I take a pill a week unless I am struggling with yeast per my doctor's instructions. So, be open to doing a combo of drugs and powder.

PH levels, Boric Acid, and Acid Mantle Cream
See youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdvnEmUzAbE&feature=youtube_gdata on how to make boric acid suppositories yourself.
I think I have confirmed that using boric acid suppositories is critical for me and my vulva. I skipped a day or two and can feel the burn already. The range of a healthy vagina is an acidic pH of 3.8 to 4.5. Boric acid is similar with a pH of 3.8 to 4.8, so it balances any variation in your vaginal acidity levels. Boric acid is often prescribed by doctors to improve vaginal health.
The dosing is a suppository capsule that you insert vaginally, 600 mg twice a day). During your period you insert only one a day. This can be compounded at a pharmacy with a doctor's prescription or purchased through the internet without a prescription.
Some cautions:

Some cautions:
- It is critical to cover your vulva with a thick ointment like petroleum jelly or, my favorite, Crisco. Otherwise, as the boric acid suppository capsule melts, you may feel vulvar burning.
- You will find some of the boric acid (a white grainy substance) from your previous dosing if you reach inside your vagina. That's okay, but again, it burns if it has contact with the vulva. If you have this happen, wash it off externally, put on some more petroleum jelly or Crisco, and then still do your next dosing.
- Boric acid is poisonous if ingested. Mine comes with a skull and bones on the label. Enough said.
